Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between impact glass and tempered glass?
Tempered glass is heat-treated to break into small safe pieces (used in showers, doors). Impact glass is laminated — even when struck and cracked, the PVB interlayer holds the glass in place, preventing intrusion or hurricane debris from entering. Most modern impact windows use both.
Is impact glass really required in Miami-Dade?
For new construction and major renovations, yes — Miami-Dade and Broward counties enforce the HVHZ code requiring impact-rated openings or shutters. We can confirm what your specific permit requires.
How thick is impact glass?
Standard residential impact glass is 7/16 to 9/16 inch thick — visibly thicker than ordinary glass but indistinguishable in installed appearance. Tinted, Low-E and decorative options are all available in impact-rated thicknesses.
